Šimsová, Marie ; Doležalová, Lucie (advisor) ; Horský, Jan (referee)
The presented master thesis deals with the work of Jane Austen. The author's novels are analysed from the perspective of the concept of the family, both from a literary and demographic point of view. These research questions constitutes two subject of the examination. The first subject is the family, as it is the cornerstone of Jane Austen's short stories. The objective of this work is to analyse the extent to which family relationships determine the possibilities of the main characters and heroines; how the heroines benefit from family ties or, on the contrary, want to escape from them. The conclusions show that Austen applied this determination in all studied novels. This work further examines the degree of cooperation and rivalry of the individual families in the novels. At this point, a significant diversity of interfamily relationships was found. Secondly, this work maps selected demographic idiosyncrasies in Jane Austen's family, in the families from her short stories, and in historical demographic studies of England at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. This thesis focuses on the number and composition of individual families, their origin, social status, property relations and to some extent legal relationships, mainly related to the issue of inheritance and the situation of widows in...

"A Ball of String Full of Knots": Narrative Strategies in Jeanette Winterson's Early Novels and Their Later Development
Krejčí, Patrik ; Nováková, Soňa (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to describe the employment of narrative strategies in the novels of Jeanette Winterson with the focus on their development over time. The specific novels to be addressed are: Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, The Passion, Sexing the Cherry, Written on the Body, Art & Lies, Gut Symmetries and The PowerBook. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit serves as the thematic source for all the other texts, thus determining the sustained concentration on the issues of storytelling, time history. It also contains first narratological experiments, most notably the embedded narratives that are arguably the most crucial of the strategies Winterson utilizes, for they appear in some form in all of her novels. A significant contribution of The Passion and Sexing the Cherry is their historical setting, which accentuates the clash between fantasy (storytelling) and facts (history). Moreover, they introduce a second narrator in order to enrich the texts with an additional perspective and they use the ensuing duality of the narrators to problematize gender. In the last four novels, Winterson reaches the peak of her experimentation, since they take the themes of the previous novels even further, as if exploring what are the limits of storytelling. The complexity of the narrative structures has deepened,...

Pittnerová, Tereza ; Kubíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Peterka, Josef (referee)
This thesis on Work of Pavel Kohout from 1979 to 1989 deals the period of Kohout's life and work during his exile in Austria. The aim was to find out the main characteristics of Pavel Kohout's prosaic art and also to compare the period critiques and show their contact and different points. The first part focuses on a destiny of Pavel Kohout in chosen decade. The second part examines his novels Nápady svaté Kláry and Hodina tance a lásky together with the memoir-novel Kde je zakopán pes. The final part studies the period critiques and try to point out their similarity or difference. Thanks to analysis, the author found out that in exile Pavel Kohout continues in his poetic style, but his work also evinces the element of autentization. The novels Nápady svaté Kláry and Hodina tance a lásky represent Kohout's ability in fabulation. Value of the memoir-novel Kde je zakopán pes consists in its genre, which places the text on the border between fiction and non-fiction. The author proved that the beletrization of own memories increases the esthetic impact of a text. A comparison of certain critiques showed that a literary criticism looks at Kohout's work inconsistently. In novels Nápady svaté Kláry and Hodina tance a lásky the reviewers appreciate the presentation of chosen themes. The memoir-novel is often...

Mario Pratesi and Tuscany
Straková, Michaela ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
The subject and main aim of the bachelor thesis, "Mario Pratesi and Tuscany" is to introduce a quite unknown and hardly accessible author writing in the 19th and 20th century, and his native land. The introductory section outlines the historical background and presents the highlights that are related to the unification of Italy. A description of the author's life and a chronological review of his works follow. The next chapters are devoted to Tuscany, the author's native land. We try to find out to what extent Pratesi's creation was influenced by the environment in which he was born and grew up. Next is an analytical part, in which we introduce several major topics that the author uses in his novels (focusing on numerous elements) and according to those we attempt to create a comprehensive picture of Tuscany and its inhabitants at the time. This is based on two major works, the novels: L'Eredità and Perfidie del caso. A brief insight into the language of Pratesi's works with emphasis on regional and dialect influences is considered too. In conclusion we outline the strengths and weaknesses of the author's novels and try to figure out why Mario Pratesi is an author rather less well-known, both in the Czech Republic as in his native country, Italy. We will try to put the author in historical and...
Humour and Irony in Jane Austen: novels and film adaptations
Říčná, Tereza ; Nováková, Soňa (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
Even though Austen's novels may seem to be a kind of modern fairy-tales, enabling an emotional escape from everyday life to a world immune of contemporary uncertainties, in fact, they are intellectually satisfying for their witty, bitter and critical dialogues and the satire of the authorial commentary. Austen who submitted to the conventions of her age seems to have accepted her position in the narrow society she lived in and yet she looked at it with humour, which in her works often becomes the effect of her irony. Nevertheless, the usage of the means of humour and irony, to comment on the socio-economic position of women and the inner world of women is slightly different in Jane Austen's novels and in the film/television adaptations. While readers, viewers or critics compare a novel and its adaptation, many of them consciously or subconsciously prefer the originary text above its screen version. Even though sometimes the success of the film overshadows the popularity of its fictional model, films are still regarded the lesser art, incomparable to literature. Films seem to be undemanding when we imagine the effort one has to produce while decoding meanings from fiction. Yet, both fiction and film have become strongly interconnected and almost inseparable. Directors have been able to strike the reading...
